Title: Weird music stuck in your head or weird television/movies you watch
Post by: Virgil0211 on April 07, 2010, 08:59:22 AM
Well, I've decided to put off building a desktop until I have a bit more money, so now I have a cheap laptop on which to do my evil. Considering it's been a few weeks since I made one of my random nonsense topics, here's another. Discuss a strange song or piece of music that's stuck in your head. I'll start off.

It's the theme to 'Ninja Sentai Kakuranger' (parts of which were used for season 3 of 'Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers' and that weird-ass (by Power Rangers standards) 'Mighty Morphin' Alien Rangers' segment at the end of season 3). The show itself is a bit weird. The action scenes look like a mix between standard sentai/Power Rangers and that old Adam West Batman TV show, with onomattopoeia(sp?) sound effects flashing on the screen. And yet, the music makes it feel serious. I don't know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. I mean, take a look at the first few minutes of this clip.

Am I the only one who gets that impression?

...No offense dude, but you watch way to much weird TV shows and movies. :P

But speaking of songs like that...

*Bows*

OK, granted, I'm one to talk. :D

It just dawned on me that I spoke about as much about the weird show as I did the weird music, if not more. As such, I changed the topic title to better reflect that. =P

And yes, Surhot. You are one to talk.  :D

Just for that, you have to watch this series in its entirety: http://blip.tv/file/3425824

(I don't know how to embed Blip.tv videos, if it's even possible. Probably for the best, though. If I find out, I'm liable to post a deluge of videos from "The Spoony Experiment".)

If there's more interest in embedding Blip.TV, I'll write a BBcode for it.

Is there a way to do it manually, though? I mean, I tried the embed code they provide, and it didn't work. It could just be that I'm a programming retard that has no idea how to do anything with this kind of stuff. I mean, it took me about a day just to figure out how to use the MOUNT command in DosBox properly.

No, with the problem we've had with spammers, I'm just not willing to turn on HTML in posts.

Awww, did it have to be the season 2 opening? That was my favorite season of that show. You've hurt my feelings. T_T;

Serious note: Honestly, I find these a bit stranger.

Hayden Christensen in Return of the Jedi, no guns in E.T., and now this. Why do people feel the need to screw with the classics?

Semi topic related, for some reason I can't get a certain movie out of my head.
I haven't seen it, but I feel like I almost HAVE to see V for Vendetta.
Odd.

Odd.

I don't know whether or not to recommend you see the comic book. On the one hand, the comic book is far superior in terms of storytelling, complexity, etc. On the other hand, the movie looks very good visually and isn't a bad film when taken by itself. Personally, I find it hard to watch the movie after reading the graphic novel. I have to be in a particular mood for it, and be willing to forget how many liberties they took with the story. I guess I would lean towards don't read the novel until after you see the movie. You won't risk having the movie spoiled, and may still be able to enjoy it after reading it.

And now for something completely different:

Thanks for the advice on that.
I'll probably look into renting it if I can't find it on youtube or Google video.

I do believe I've been beaten at my own wierdness game.
Damnit...
Aw well, easy come, easy go.

Something else stuck in my head is ln(8 ). //damn emotes...
I mean, it's equal to 3*ln(2) ~ 3*(0.70) = 2.1 which is 1/10 of the legal drinking age in the USA.

As for weird videos...
Well, I do watch a shitload of youtube poops (pun intended).
I also love parodies of infomercials.

Case in point:

I had this song stuck in my head until I heard the real version and realized how horrible it was.  Chris-Chan is my favorite internet lol-cow, no matter how bad I'm feeling on any given day, watching him fail makes me feel better about myself.

It's based on those old Fleischer Brothers cartoons, and that's the way blacks had to be portrayed back then.

As you saw in the school clip, there are genuine blacks in the movie.

I. FUCKING. HATE. COMMUNISTS!

Yet, I really like how this sounds:

And it's this particular version, with the Soviet text. The newer text just doesn't sound as good to me. Sometimes I think that this is the REAL reason some people would become communists. This anthem is brainwashing, really.

I'm so tempted to replace the last word of the song title with something more fitting, but I think that may be dancing on an edge that even Gumba Masta wouldn't approach :P

Not bad at all for a children's show. Very dark and dystopian, with a lot of libertarian themes for an Australian series.

Nope, doesn't need it. Do you really want me to get into all of the things that would have to happen in order to get a virus to even run on Linux? I mean, you can't even download an executable and run it yourself without going in specifically to turn on its ability to run. Then there's trying to get root access...

Although, I do have a friend who got really creeped out by the weeping angels. Got to the point where some of his buddies would cover their eyes and move only when his back was turned. =P

George Lucas, the man who released onto DVD such classic works of his as Howard the Duck (the one with the duck tits/topless duck) and Jar Jar Binks has refused to release the SWHS on any format whatsoever, apparently hoping to let it die along with his shame over having made it. This thing was so bad that Lucas was ashamed of it even compared to a topless duck and Jar Jar Binks. That alone should strike terror into your bones.

But why take my word for it, when I can share my pain with the rest of you?

I might end up posting some more street fighter OST videos for a while. I love the music. I wish I could set an alarm to play it with a rising volume level for when I need to wake up in the morning.

I love these two in particularly. They just sound... wrong, I guess. I never learned to read sheet music very well, or got very far in music theory, so I usually just went by instinct and such. I don't know what it is about these two, particularly the first. I think I'd have trouble playing it if I ever picked up an instrument again. But they're still enjoyable.

I guess I'm rambling, but here they are.

The band I was in used to cover this one:

I'm not sure what it is, but something about the lead singer bothers me. For some reason, it feels like a cover of it by AC/DC might sound better. I guess it just feels like he's wavering between speaking and actually singing. The rest of it sounds good, though.

I didn't mean that his movements bothered me. I figured something like that was going on. I just meant his singing voice. Maybe it's just personal taste, but I didn't like the style he chose for that song. I liked everything else, though. Admittedly, it takes willpower to put on a show when suffering from a condition like that.

This probably won't mean anything to any of the non-trekkies here, but...

A couple of samples from Ron Jones's score for "Best of Both Worlds", which won an award when it was released on a stand-alone CD. He was soon thereafter fired by producer Rick Berman because, according to him, the music was getting too noticeable. I.e., he fired the composer for being too good at his job. From then on, music in the various series was generally treated much like one would a toilet. It's there, serving some role, but should be tucked away where people won't notice it.

Sorry for the rant. It's just frustrating that, just as the series was hitting its stride with some really high-quality scripts and stories, that Berman goes off and fires the composer. The subsequent music wasn't bad, but let's just say that there were some really crappy episodes in the first couple of seasons that you could still watch and enjoy thanks to the music. I'd love to see them hire Ron Jones to go back and write scores for the rest of the series and release that as some sort of special edition, but I doubt that'd ever happen. It'd be tantamount to Berman admitting a mistake, which means he'd have to apologize for the majority of ST: Voyager and almost all of ST: Enterprise. =P

Well, DS9 kinda makes up for those two, I guess. But I haven't seen anything from those series, except reviews and such.

1. I only had 2 hours of sleep at the time. Cut me some slack. =P

2. It was between him and Michael Piller. Piller quit working on Voyager after a bit to focus more on DS9, leaving Voyager to Berman. DS9 increased in quality starting in its 2nd season. Voyager stayed bad until about season 4 or 5, where it was mediocre to very, VERY occasionally being good.

And Enterprise was almost all awful. Apparently, season 4 was an improvement when it was handed over to Manny Coto (sp?), but I never stuck around for that. I quit after the time traveling space Nazis showed up.

Except that DS9 was mostly a ripoff from Babylon 5. They were great when they struck out on their own though.

Although DS9 probably had some influence from the Paramount exec who pitched the idea to Berman and Piller, it's doubtful the latter two knew about it (according to JMS). There are also a few key differences. For example, B5's jump gate was a mundane technology employed at the majority of outposts, whereas DS9's wormhole was the only stable one ever discovered and led to an unexplored region of space. DS9's position at the edge of this frontier was the source of its importance, whereas B5 was important for its political relationship with other races. That sort of thing.

I can see the similarities, though. For example, I tend to fall asleep during both of their first seasons. :-P

DS9 was important for Star Trek just from the perspective of developing the story, though. I mean, it was developed after Roddenberry died, and the writers weren't afraid to work outside of his edicts. They were also willing to explore how the Borg attack in "Best of Both Worlds" would affect the Federation, especially when they went up against another technologically advanced enemy that could easily infiltrate their organization (The Founders). The most interesting part about the episodes "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" (2-parter) is that they aired in January of 1996. Take a look at those episodes and tell me your brain doesn't go immediately to the Patriot Act.

Anyway, I'm done for now. Just thought I'd give DS9 a token defense. They're both great shows, and I'd be hard pressed to pick one over the other.

EDIT: Well, not quite. Thought I'd post the fav quote I put in earlier. =P

Thanks. I'll remember that for the future.

Anyway, I guess what I was trying to say earlier is that it's likely that DS9 borrowed from B5's series bible, but wasn't the biggest component of it. The concept was originally pitched as a father and son being stationed on a contested frontier. Now, if you want a really obvious B5 ripoff, compare Species 8472 with the Shadows. =P

Yeah, Voyager was a mess. Although, they did have a couple of good parts. Ricardo's Doctor (The emergency medical hologram without a name, not a time lord.) and 7 of 9 were good characters as well, though the Doctor didn't develop as much until later, and 7 of 9 was a later addition to the cast. And as much as I may joke about Species 8472 being a knockoff of the shadows, Scorpion was a good episode. I mean, it was actually good enough to make you weep at what the show could've been if they'd had that kind of writing and direction for the rest of the series rather than one mid-series two-parter. I also feel a bit bad for the cast of the show. I mean, even the ones who seemed to consistently give out the worst performances on the show had other roles where they did well outside of Star Trek. Apparently, they were told to act the way they did by the directors (with incompetents like Kenneth Biller, I wouldn't be surprised), and they just kept getting terrible, unwieldy dialogue. I mean, the technobabble was about as nonsensical as the stuff in Doctor Who, but it wasn't able to make it charming like Doctor Who was.

And then there's Enterprise. They stumbled about horribly until about the third season, where they finally got the idea that "Hey, people might want to watch stuff that's actually relevant and might have real consequences. We've got time-traveling elements in here, so let's use that to make people think that the timeline might in some way be changed. Oh, and we might want to make our characters not act quite so much like dickheads in space." Then they hired Manny Coto (sp?) in some desperate attempt to save the series. He was going to take over in season 4. Yet, in some screwed up "scorched earth" move, they aped cheap action movie cliches in the season 3 finale, and teased the season 4 premier as featuring time traveling space Nazis. Needless to say, alot of viewers left after that. From what I've heard (haven't actually checked myself yet), season 4 of Enterprise was an improvement over the rest of the series, but I think I just described why it wasn't enough to save the show.

That was a big problem with the last two Star Trek series. They just took their audience for granted and never seemed to consider that they could lose their core fanbase. Rick Berman was probably the worst thing to ever happen to the franchise.

And Brannon "Mini-Rick" Braga. They should look to the Stargate series to see how to do it right. When the writers realized they were getting formulaic and predictable around season 4, they started lampooning themselves. They also introduced a lot of new elements to keep the show good.

I'm convinced that this channel is one of the best channels on youtube.

This guy takes songs, and completely changes the genre. Some of his remixes are amazing, and others are just plain hilarious. He'll take the music out and change it to fit a specific genre while keeping the original vocals.

Here are a few examples:

Sometimes he will change the vocals up for the sake of sounding completely different. This is primarily when he does death metal remixes of pop songs or Radio Disney remixes of thrash/death metal songs:

I don't think it was the main cast that was so much the problem as what the writers did with them. I mean, Voyager had alot of potential. With a good writing team, they could have been amazing. The cast showed they were capable of putting out really good performances here and there.

And Doctor Who never really used it to further the plot like they did.

And Star Trek didn't really start using it to further the plot until later in the franchise's run. And besides, in Doctor Who, it was charming. Almost whimsical. In Trek, it tended to get ridiculous.

And Brannon "Mini-Rick" Braga. They should look to the Stargate series to see how to do it right. When the writers realized they were getting formulaic and predictable around season 4, they started lampooning themselves. They also introduced a lot of new elements to keep the show good.

Agreed with the Stargate reference, but I don't hold Braga in anywhere near the same category as Berman. Braga's main problem was the fact that he wasn't a very good writer in addition to Berman's influence. Braga is a bit like George Lucas in a way. Both can come up with some good ideas now and then, but they need to be moderated by someone who's actually a skilled writer on top. Left to their own devices, though, both come up with some ridiculous story ideas.

True. I mean, what a setup: half the cast ARE FREAKIN' TERRORISTS! Imagine the potential for drama and conflict and all of the numerous episodes upon episodes showing the Star Trek ideal of putting aside your differences and working together!

Except that they all end up being about as threatening as teddy bears and end up behaving EXACTLY like Starfleet crewmembers at the end of Episode 1.

Quote

In other words, without Berman/Braga. I think the only good thing you could say about Voyager was that it took up too much of their time and they ended up pretty much leaving DS9 alone to be awesome.

Yeah. I mean, the whole Maquis thing was built up through TNG and DS9 primarily to set up Voyager. This was supposed to be the big show that integrated the conflict into the main plot. I mean, what if Janeway had been the first officer with the captain getting killed in the first episode, then having a power play between her and Chakotay, this experienced guerilla(sp?) captain, with Janeway having to earn respect and hold onto her authority as the commander. In addition, earlier episodes in DS9 and TNG established that the colonies in the Maquis had a different culture from that of the federation. They didn't fall in line with the federation idealized world so much, so that would make an interesting conflict.

There is one possible upside, depending on how much you're willing to MST the series. Just think, with such a well established difference of culture and hostility towards the federation, just what did Janeway do to break their will and turn them into her willing lackeys? I mean, look at Chakotay, B'elanna, and Harry Kim. You've got the guerilla leader who hates the federation, a half-klingon with an attitude who hates the federation more, and just look at Harry Kim. I mean, I know he's not a maquis, but everything about his demeanor just screams whipping boy.

That's a big part of the reason I liked the Scorpion two-parter. It actually explored the conflict that was supposed to be a part of the series and did a good job with it.

In other words, without Berman/Braga. I think the only good thing you could say about Voyager was that it took up too much of their time and they ended up pretty much leaving DS9 alone to be awesome.

Like I said, I don't think Braga was so bad. He did well when paired up with a good writer. It was just when he was left to his own devices, he was a disaster. For example, when paired with a good writer, you got things like Scorpion, ST: First Contact, 7 of 9, and the Doctor. Leave him on his own, and you get crap like Threshold. If you thought creationists fucked up evolution, just wait until you see that episode.

Yeah, especially when it didn't work!

Not to mention, it lets them make some really unusual creature designs and such. I guess that's part of the reason I'd love to see a Trek/Who crossover. It'd be interesting to see the Borg integrate the trek/who technology from an aesthetic perspective. And the Borg monologue might sound interesting if Dalek, Cyberman, and Ood voices were mixed in.

A little tribute to the internet sensation Botchamania by the band Shining Wizado.

Quote
It was some time ago
I was a wrestling fan
But I couldn't even watch it
Thought it was so fucking bland
Got sick of boring matches
Got sick of scripted promos
I had a sickness and I
Needed a cure
I went online to kill some time
And saw you on a message board
You didn't look promising but you were there
And I was sick of porn
And so I watched you with a frown
And you turned it upside down
Now I only want you baby
Even though you been around

Botchamania you're not alone
When you are in the Danger Zone
There is no Danger here inside
The Danger Zone of my heart
Botchamania my love for you
Is like 21 I got 22 I don't even care
If you're making money
I came to love you
Check the adjective: love

A year or two went by
And I still want your nookie
And so I sneak a peak
At your website when you're not looking
Always reminding us
Everybody talks too much
I forgive you for the shit with that guy's knee
That was fucked up
Screen-capture Jim Cornette
Tweet it to Vince McMahon
And then he runs and breaks his ankle
And we laugh at him ha ha ha
All of your music rocks
You're sponsored by CHIKARA
You'll be around as long as
World Wrestling Entertainment
Continues to employ
And push Sin Cara

Botchamania you're not alone
When you are in the Danger Zone
There is no Danger here inside
The Danger Zone of my heart
Botchamania my love for you
Is like 21 I got 22 I don't even care
If you're making money
You better bring a lunch
Botchamania you're beautiful
The way that you move I need you so
I never could leave you say you won't
And I will believe you oh
Botchamania I can't believe
You haven't been sued by everyone
Especially CZW
They don't come across too well

Earthbound Zero/Mother 1 has arguably my favorite soundtrack of any RPG. There's just something about it that really clings to me. Maybe the fact that even though it is 8-bit, it just has this charming feature about it. Unfortunately, Mother 1 is a Japanese only title. We were supposed to get the game as Earthbound Zero in America for the NES, but by the time they had translated the game and had it ready to be shipped, Nintendo decided at the last second to simply cancel the North American release due to the SNES already well established here, and Nintendo just weren't confident the game would sell well. That being said, the translated version of the game is still playable through emulation, as well as post production carts that people have made.

Mother 1 was my favorite of the 3. Despite the fact that it was incredibly simple, yet insanely difficult, there is a real charm to the game that I can't really describe.

I did a playthrough of it last fall on my youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/IronFury#grid/user/9FC1319C5168DE98)

I forgot who you meant by "Trebek".
At first I thought it was a Star Trek reference.  :P Then I remembered Sean Connery saying that on a parody of Celebrity Jeopardy.

I know this is going to be a weird one, but...

If you want to skip to the part where the song picks up, it's at about 40 seconds in. I forgot how to do the time link thingy again. Trying to learn python and such.

This is actually one of those bits of media that I've seen both as a Christian, an agnostic, and an atheist. Strangely, it's the most interesting as an atheist. It's actually a strange thing. Watching it from a religious perspective, it's hard to see one of the big sources of conflict in this story. When all the characters are viewed as amoral forces, god becoming something of a force of nature rather than an object of worship, the conflict between Rameses and Moses gets catapaulted(sp?) into being the main plot, which is far more interesting from the standpoint of drama. This song encapsulates it very well and has some very good imagery, such as the scene where Ramases' throne is sitting in the shadow of the statue of their father.

This came as some sample music for Windows 7.  Very good piece. :)

Another, "I'm Through" by Vic Chestnut (sample with Windows XP) was pretty good too.

Seems we have left weird territory to awesome territory.  Here is mine, both songs.  Despite what you see at 2:10-2:14 it is a male.  3:32-3:38 might be problem except they are not human they are daemonettes.

This is not one of those times, however.

For a song based on a wrestling promo, it is rather catchy.

Why hasn't this been done in other games yet? I would love to have the MST3K crew rip Halo as I was playing story mode. That'd be awesome. :-P
