General Discussion / Libertarian Purity Test
February 01, 2013, 11:10:25 AM
http://www.bcaplan.com/cgi-bin/purity.cgi

I found this when searching information about the influence of libertarianism in video games. I figured I'd post it here. I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of this community as well as what, if any, questions you answered "No" to. My score was a 160.

General Discussion / Debunking some claims.
January 25, 2013, 02:22:42 AM
OK this is just frustrating. I'm not sure if this would belng in failquotes or if it warrents its own thread or if it belongs in another thread but here we go. Temerit just made one of the most frustrating claims we regularly get from Obamatons. THe cnversation went osmething like this.

Taxes under Obama have been the lowest in over 75 years and up until the last couple months he hadn't raised any taxes so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

As far as regulation goes, the only substantial new regulation Obama has introduced is the Dodd-Frank bill, something that I think couldn't have been more warranted.

If you're talking about right wing claims of massive amounts of money going to failed green energy startups, most of those claims have been debunked time and again. Romney made these claims during the debates and the fact-checkers tore them apart.

Libya and....? For perspective we should remember that Libya was 1/1000th the scale of Iraq/Afghanistan in terms of money and the people there actually like us more now as opposed to Iraquis and Afghans that hate us. I still don't agree with it, but we don't have a near strong enough anti-war lobby in the US.

I'm not sure what other "war" you referring to him as starting? Drone strikes on Yemen?

What? http://cnsnews.com/news/article/obama-seeks-new-power-merge-agencies-pledges-some-action-or-without-congress

Are you referring to unemployment insurance and expansion of food stamps during the recession? Other than that I'm not sure what you could be talking about.

The biggest frustration is with the whole "Under Obama Taxes are the lowezst they've ever been" Bit. I'm pretty sure this is false in some why but I really need more information for this.

General Discussion / John Locke
January 23, 2013, 11:23:35 PM
I figured some people would know more about the subject then I do but, I find it hard to reconcile this man. He was both a proponent of the Social Contract and Natural Law/Rights. As well as being the one who coined "Life, Liberty, and property." If I recall correctly. How does this work? The two notions don't seem compatible.

Since this is the Christmas season I decided I'd ask. I know there are at least two  and likely more atheists who frequent the board and I was wondering. Do you celebrate holidays? I was just wondering since my family, who isn't particularly religious either is taking part in the standard Christmas rituals and I wanted to get some opinions from fellow skeptics.

General Discussion / Talking Politics with loved ones.
December 21, 2012, 10:16:06 PM
I was just wondering  if anybody else had trouble with this. I find it exceedingly difficult to talk politics with certain close relatives. Especially my hardcore left-liberal mother who keeps on with the position that Obama is just a great guy and that without Obamacare she may die. It becomes very frustrating to discuss it with her because most of her arguments are very emotional and when I try to ask questions and brin g up some more logical elements she jsut shuts off entierly. I feel like if I press on further i'd upset her and I odn't want to do that. She's my mom you know? So does anybody else have this issue?

This has been something bothering me for a while. Many times, when I maked an argument. People tend to accuse my argument or position of being "negative" or demand a "positive" argument from me. I'm not well versed in  what these terms mean in that context or how they are used. Would anybody in the community mind educating me in this area to help me have a better grasp of  what they are tyring to argue with these statements?

Hello everybody! I'm pretty new on the boards but I figured this was the best place to start asking. I figured this community would now more about the subject then I do and I would like to create a directory of private free market or charity alternatives to "public goods". Such as Underwriters Laboratories. Things like regulatory and standards organizations, welfare, and retirement. Anything that presents a private sector alternative to the goods and services provided by the state. I feel it would be an invaluable resource for educating people about this sort of thing and would ultimately benefit our cause a great deal.
