May as well throw this in since it seems relevant to the discussion.  Recently YouTube has seen fit to show me two ads for each ad space. Maybe this has to do with the fact that I hit skip a lot, especially if the ad is too long and/or its in a bad part of the video and/or I've already seen the ad enough times.

...Now that I've typed that out, YT's ad behavior seems even more asinine. Huh.

I was thinking the hay in this context would be the additional false positives each wanted face would produce.

Louisiana student says math symbol looks like a gun, prompts police investigation

*sigh*

Student B comments the square root symbol looks like a gun, Student A responds with an off-hand comment, which goes thru the rumor mill and results in Student A getting investigated by the police under suspicion that he may be planning a school shooting. Police determine Student A does not own a single gun and (shock of shocks) didn't actually do anything wrong.

The paranoid part of my brain is telling me 1) this is going to be counted as a school shooting incident, and 2) the omission of Student A's name seems rather suspicious.

Oh and it looks like Student A is going to an expulsion hearing. Gotta make an example of those dangerous students who aren't actually a threat to anybody.

Saying the city itself doesn't feel right, but I don't even know who exactly to pin this on.

ARTICLE: Savannah's abandoned shopping cart ordinance going up for vote

Summary: The Savannah City Council is set to vote on an ordinance which would fine businesses if their carts are found outside their property. Did someone steal one of your carts and leave it on the side of the road a few miles away? That'll be a fine of $375.

So you probably recall back in 2014 there was an initiative to break up California into six states. Personally, I was a little disappointed when it seemingly vanished. But Timothy Draper and other Cali breakup proponents haven't given up yet; back in late October, they cleared the first hurdle for the new/revamped initiative to divide up California into three states:

Article: 3 Californias? Billionaire's Plan to Split California into 3 Separate States Clears First Hurdle

And in more recent news, today supporters for the State of New California have declared their independence from the rest of the state:

Article: New California Declares Independence From Rest Of State

Now, I'm generally too detached/lazy to figure out how the likelihood any of the proposals will succeed, but I still find it fascinating to hear about, and, as a non-Californian, I'd really like to see this make it to the ballot, if nothing else.

Not really sure if that warrants a new topic, but I couldn't think of any other way to begin this discussion.

Indeed; that's why I submitted Tozzi for BBE.   ;)

If you all were hoping for another one of my stupid internet arguments, you're in luck!

Summary: In practice, @RadicalGoats fails to argue against free market capitalism.

Back when Bloomberg posted that scare piece, "Americans are Dying Younger, Saving Corporations Billions," RadicalGoats gave his knee-jerk reaction, which I briefly "discussed" with him.

Five months later, RadicalGoats elected to continue the conversation (pictured below). His last tweet (as of this post, bottom of pic) is so facepalm-inducing in its cognitive dissonance that I couldn't figure out what the best response was. So I gave him three.

Yes, it says that it was issued by Google Trust Services.

EDIT: So I'm beginning to think this is something on my end. When I set up the secondary email, I had it linked to my main email so I could check both without having to log in or out (because reasons, probably laziness). I tried link-checking it just now, and wouldn't you know it, I got another security alert because Google recognized the app (presumably Firefox) as "Less Secure." (I also got blocked from it because I upped the security settings a bit).

If this is true, gog I feel like an idiot.

I'm looking at the certificate, and I'm honestly not sure what I'm even looking for. Oddest thing I can discern is that the page info does not supply ownership information, and when I go to check the certificate, it says the OU is not part of the certificate, neither issued to nor issued by.

And on top of that, another login attempt was made just today (about an hour before this post), despite the new rangen password from Last Pass. The info Google provides feels confusing and unhelpful; saying the attempt was made in the United States (just "United States"), but when I do a lookup for the IP address, it tells me it's from Google Ireland.

I suppose the only bit of relief is that the login attempt was blocked, but it's still frustrating being told someone knows my randomly generated password. I went ahead and gave it a newer, longer rangen password, but it's starting to feel like an exercise in futility. I suppose I can be thankful I don't even use that address for anything, but it's still worrying.

I'll go ahead and try another malware scanner, but that aside...

Phishing seems highly improbable; I've used the secondary email for all of two things: picarto and linking it to my primary gmail account (which didn't report any such problem). And the only times I so much as glanced at the password were when I had LastPass rangen it and its replacement.

Yesterday I got a notice from Google that someone had discovered my password for my secondary email, and tried to use it to log in. Thankfully, Google denied them as they were trying to log in with an unfamiliar/unverified device.

The password was randomly generated and saved via Last Pass, and the email address itself is less than two months old (as of this post) so needless to say, I'm a bit surprised by all of this. I've already changed the password, but I'm wondering what else, if anything, I could do to prevent this in the future. Any idea how anyone even could have gotten it?

Article: "Barrier windows in Philly beer delis: Symbols of safety or distrust?"

From the article, "[Cindy Bass] has proposed legislation that would force beer deli owners to remove thick plexiglass counter windows," claiming that 1) said windows are a symbol of distrust (suggesting the clientele is dangerous) and 2) too many of these establishments are merely "masquerading" as delis when their main source of income is alcohol.

I mean, I like to joke that politics makes people stupid, but my goodness -- it took me about two seconds to see the flaws in Bass's logic.

"I'm smart enough to ride a rocket I built myself and I know the world is flat. Vote for me!"

Self-taught rocket scientist (and Flat Earther) plans to launch over ghost town

Summary: "Mad" Mike Hughes, limo driver and daredevil, plans to launch homemade rocket over the ghost town of Amboy, California. Which in and of itself actually seems kind of cool... The parts which get me are that 1) his main sponsor is Research Flat Earth, 2), Hughes himself is a flat-earther, and 3) he seems to be using this daredevil stunt to launch his run in California's gubernatorial campaign. Adding to the confusion is the fact that he understands aerodynamics et al... but also says there's no difference between science and science fiction. 9_9

That said, Hughs intends to build a rocket to take himself into space somewhere down the line so he can "snap a picture and see with his own eyes," as the article puts it. Huh.

Guy by the twitter handle @izs has created a program to allow him to block anyone who disagrees with him. Which, according to this screencap (Original) (Mirror) amounts to over 376k people.

And gog, he's so openly proud of himself for building an echo chamber.
