I put out a craigslist ad advertising each month's local LP meeting and had an interesting exchange today.

QuotePerson: Does your organization support Ron Paul?

Myself: We agree with Ron Paul in principal on many issues and consider him a major ally in the fight for Liberty. However, we do not officially support him because he runs for office as a Republican and the Libertarian Party is separate political party.
Quote
Person: Without getting into the details, may I ask why does that matter as far as the upcoming election is concerned?
Supporting him in the run for the presidency I feel as if would be the biggest and most key method of getting libertarian practices to actually become a mainstream way of thinking. I guess what I'm getting it, is I'm for people who are willing to support him in the upcoming election. Am I in the wrong place? Thank you

I get why people think this way, but I am troubled with the cult of personality many have with Ron Paul. Is he the best we have in Congress and closest to a legit Libertarian? Yes. However, I think it has been a detriment to the LP as a whole. He's made it seem he is on a one man quest and that there isn't any other man who can do anything about it.  Most people say they're "libertarian" but when push comes to shove they won't vote for our candidates because (Insert usual cliches about 3rd party candidates.)

As someone who will be running for office as a Libertarian in 2012, I wonder just how prevalent this mentality is and how much of it is RP responsible for.

Little gem for everyone

6 months ago I bought a used car, did the whole tax and title deal, and figured that was that. Until I got a letter in the mail informing me since my "Purchase Price" was less than 2/3rds the Blue Book value, the state says that I must've given a fabricated price. It then informed me they recalculated my taxes based on Blue Book value and said I had 30 days to pay the extra taxes. Needless to say this should end up being a fun round in court.

This is a letter I sent to the delegates at the Libertarian Party of Florida's convention. While it is written concerning those events, I believe this is a problem with the LP on a national scale.

I personally believe the Libertarian Party is under attack. Not by some grand conspiracy to bring us down, but by groups who have no where else to turn and are looking to use the LP as a vehicle. I'm speaking of course about the various "Tea Party Republicans" who have become so prevalent over the last few years.

I have no real ill will towards these people. They are finally waking up to the fact Republicans are just as Pro Big Government as those "Left Wing Socialists" they supposedly hate. It is no different than when a Democrat voter finally realizes that Dems aren't going to legalize weed or create any real social equality. These people are politically homeless and the LP serves as a beacon they can go to.

However, what I do harbor ill will towards is there repeated attempts to change the LP and make it into some idealized Republican Party. Nationally, the "Reform Caucus" is already trying to make the LP into the Republican Party lite and now it appears to be happening here in Florida as well.

Our current Vice Chair has been a registered Libertarian for all of 5 months after being a Republican for a decade. I'm all for new blood, but perhaps running for Vice Chair of a county affiliate been a better starting ground?

Our former Senate candidate, and presumptive 2012 candidate, was too embarrassed to openly call himself a Libertarian. Preferring to refer to himself as "Florida's Liberty Candidate." Nevermind that he took stances that were counter to the LPF's platform, or robbed the LPF of $3,000, but that has already been discussed to death.

Finally, we have a chair who has openly said he is against running a wide range of candidates in 2012. A year when the LPF can run candidates for every state level race for free, and we want to just sit on our hands and watch Alex Snitker come up with .5% of the vote in a Senate race? Nevermind that our chair still openly donates to the Republican party and at one point openly endorsed Marco Rubio.

My main issue is that we need to quit being the Libertarian Political Philosophy Club of Florida and start being the Libertarian PARTY of Florida. If we want to be a lobbying/watchdog organization, fine. Then drop the charade and just say it. If not, then we'll be back at square one for the 2013 convention with another lost opportunity

Funny, didn't he come out in support of Ron Paul during the 2008 election before eventually going with Obama?

General Discussion / Obama Birth Certificate
April 27, 2011, 04:44:47 PM
For once I'm siding with President Obama. The birth certificate controversy has been a major BS issue for awhile now. It seems he released his "long form" certificate for public review.

I go to conspiracy site Above Top Secret as something of a guilty pleasure and the comments to the news want me crying from hilarity and the stupidity

General Discussion / North Carolina Ballot Access
March 24, 2011, 11:36:23 AM
Hey Shane

Just heard about NC's Supreme Court ruling against you guys as far as ballot access goes. Perhaps you should make a video showing why its such BS?

Here in Florida the LPF is going to make a serious effort to run a candidate for every state office and Congressional district and it wouldn't be possible if we had laws on the books like NC has.

Something that I have grown to believe is more and more bogus is America's obsession over DUIs. MADD, the chief driving force behind it, has become just another money making lobbyist group that others on this board have bemoaned. They rely mostly on emotional appeal, and it is quite easy to demonize this kind of crime. However, here are a few reasons why I think it is bogus

1. The .08 driving limit in the US is certainly bogus. Most studies have shown that drunk drivers involved in auto accidents are in the .15-.2 range.

2. A study done by Clemson University, and repeated elsewhere, has shown that the standard "Field Sobriety Test" is a poor indicator of showing how drunk someone is. In short, officers were asked to perform tests on various subjects and then determine which were intoxicated or not. The officers said about half were drunk. The catch? Everyone of the subjects were sober.

3. DUIs have turned into a moneymaking scheme for the state. With states cutting budgets, police around the country are specifically targeting drunk drivers because they bring in the most money. Convictions and fines are quick and easy money. Nevermind situations like in Oregon where state troopers were being offered $100 bonuses per drunk driving conviction.

General Discussion / Minority Congressional Districts
November 05, 2010, 09:45:43 AM
We just passed two ballot measures in Florida aimed at ending the practice of gerrymandering. Of course, several prominent Congressmen (Both Ds and Rs) were against it. While it's obvious they're simply trying to keep their seats in Congress, they've turned this into an issue of race.

One representative said "These amendments will have the effect of bleaching the state of Florida as it was before 1992 when minorities did not have the ability to elect candidates of their choice. It's unworkable. It will have a devastating effect on minorities across the state."

Call me crazy, but when you put all the blacks in one district and all the Hispanics in their own district, doesn't that end up bleaching the state much faster?

Well, if there is ever going to be a new episode of bogosity, might as well start with something fresh. This has been making the rounds.

The claim "A woman (or guy in drag) is seemingly talking on a cellphone in a Chaplin movie"

General Discussion / Lew Rockwell
October 27, 2010, 07:57:11 PM
Does anyone else here checkout Lew Rockwell?

I check it out from time and time. The tagline of the site is "Anti-War, Anti-State, Pro-Market". Seems like a great tagline. And I admit, there are some great articles on economics on there.

However, socially, I think the site is far from Libertarian. I'll never forget an article they "recommended" that Gays didn't really want marriage rights, it was just their form of penis envy. Not to mention Gary North is one of their main writers.

General Discussion / Abortion and the workforce
October 24, 2010, 11:12:16 PM
My apologies if this has been posted previously, anyway, I got an email from a prominent local Libertarian. Basicly it was saying a GOP victory wasn't anything to be happy about (Completely agree). However, then it got to this
QuoteAnd the Democrats are fully committed to the option of death to every fetus.  The blood of 50 million abortuses bothers some of them but not enough to truly matter. Maybe the Rev. Jeremiah Wright was correct, but for a different reason, to call for God's damning of America.  And ironically, at least 35 million of them would have already entered the workforce, likely  delaying what is now the imminent collapse of this country due to the socialist programs so dear to the Democrats' hearts.  At least, in this regard, the Republicans have been honorable.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a retarded statement?

General Discussion / Libertarians and the 2010 election
September 22, 2010, 01:24:00 PM
I've been helping out with Alex Snitker's senate campaign in Florida, and over the last few weeks, here are a few things I've found interesting.

1. Of the surveys we've done, of the people likely to vote Libertarian, 24% voted for Obama in 08, while only 9% voted for McCain. While the Libertarian party is considered to be a "Conservative" party, I think it's becoming clear that it can attract from the left more and more. I think that more and more young people are just as fed up with Big government as we are, and looking for real change.

2. If we ever want the Libertarian party to start becoming a major player, we need to start playing by some of the big parties rules. Case in point, Snitker made an appearance at a WorldNetDaily event in South Florida earlier this week. I'm sorry, but I think only of the big stigma's the Libertarian party has to overcome is the perception we're abunch of wackos. It helped derail Ron Paul's campaign, and it provides fuel for everyone else.

3. The Tea Party has been co-opted by the Republican Party. I know this doesn't apply to every segment, but it is by and large true. Snitker has been blocked from speaking at several Tea Party events in Tampa and Ft.Lauderdale. Why? Because they don't want to risk splitting the vote for Marco Rubio.

Future Episodes / Title IX
June 02, 2010, 11:13:32 PM
Really? I'm surprised this one hasn't come up yet.

If you're unsure of what Title IX is, in short, it was a government mandate that said schools that received federal funding have to provide equal opportunities for men's and women's sports. In a classic case of "The Road to Hell is paved with the best of intentions" it was the government trying to force supply where there clearly wasn't as high of a demand. Worse yet, Football counts towards the number of "Men's opportunities" for sports. That's a 60-70 person overhead men's sports has before we even get into things like basketball, baseball/softball, etc.  The current number of men's programs that have been cut so schools can be in compliance with Title IX lies somewhere between 400-500. Sports like Lacrosse and men's gymnastics are all but extinct.

Figured we could get a thread going of videos/articles of both bogus and unbogus ideas on income tax.

I'll start off one with a major bogus
