Title: Expelled, with lie-correcting subtitles!
Post by: MrBogosity on October 27, 2008, 02:12:31 PM
EDIT 5/29/10: I have updated the subtitles to Version 1.3.

EDIT 12/11/08: I have updated the subtitles to Version 1.2.

Haven't had the stomach yet to watch Expelled? Watched it, but hurled? Know people who think it's just the greatest flick ever and want to set them straight? You need this subtitle track! See how it works:

[yt]VwhZqNgfRC0[/yt]

It's available in two formats. The first is an SRT file. It should be compatible with pretty much everything, and is supported by YouTube and Google Video. The catch is, it may look different on different systems depending on font, screen size, etc.

SRT: https://www.bogosity.tv/files/expelled.srt (68K)

The second is an SSA file. It's not recognized everywhere, but where it works it's better because the font and size are specified, so the subtitles should work better.

SSA: https://www.bogosity.tv/files/expelled.ssa (93K)

Here's a ZIP file containing both of them:

ZIP: https://www.bogosity.tv/files/ExpelledSubtitles.zip (52K)

Octamed has also graciously hosted a torrent of the subtitle, renamed several different times to match common names for the movie:

Torrent: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1969197

Instructions on using it are for VLC Media Player (download it here (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)). Other players should recognize it; check their documentation for more information.

Put the subtitle file in the same directory as your Expelled video file. Rename it to match. For example, if the video file is "expelled.avi" then name the file "expelled.srt"; if the video file is "Expelled - No Intelligence Allowed.mp4", name the file "Expelled - No Intelligence Allowed.srt" (note: keep all extensions the same as they were).

For VLC (and most other video players), this should Just Work. If it doesn't:

Right-click the screen; go to "Video/Subtitles Track/Load File..." Select the subtitle file in the dialog box.
If that doesn't work, then click the Video menu at the top and go to "Subtitles Track/Load File..." Select the subtitle file in the dialog box.
If that doesn't work, go to "Media/Advanced Open File...", click on your video, check "Use a subtitles file", click "Browse...", select the subtitle file, then click Open, and then Play.

If none of that works, locate a small child and ask for assistance.  :P

The subtitles start up right at the start of the movie itself, right after the unnecessarily-long Premise Media promo. If it shows up before or after, then know that this lag is on your system. Hopefully it won't lead to any confusion as you watch.

might want to add that they first need a copy of the movie! You'd be surprised...

Also, I found it necessary to rename the movie file to "expelled.avi" before i got it to work properly.

great job Shane!
and thanks!!

Ok, does that work with youtube? Or do I have to download the whole movie from somewhere?

I'm afraid only the video uploader can add subtitles on YouTube.

If you have the whole movie on YouTube or Google Video, you can add in the SRT as a subtitle track, but I think you have to be the owner of the video.

[MOD: Sorry; I originally thought he had included the Expelled movie itself in with the torrent. I'm restoring the link. SK]

http://www.mininova.org/tor/1969197 (fixed seed)

*** deleted this as the seed was broken - http://www.mininova.org/tor/1963324

I thought I'd stick these where people are most likely to find them :)
Could someone try and download the torrent? I'm not sure if my seed is working since I've never make a torrent before.
I included copies using common movie filenames to make it easy. There's also a readme pointing here.

It was probably the torrent site then. If I remember correctly (I don't have a torrent) you can find things that are copyrighted on them.

Okay, but that is not the linker's fault, is it?
Anyway, I found it, I will send it to you.

Edit: I mean, according to that logic, it would be against da rules to link to YouTube, because it contains copyrighted material as well!
Also, I sent it to you. I'm not sure whether it worked, though.

It contains illegal material, too!
Title: Re: Expelled, with lie-correcting subtitles!

Hi guys, I made the torrent seeing how Shane put "It's free to download and spread around" in the youtube vid, plus I link back to this site/thread in the description and the included readme.txt file, so I'm not pretending it's mine or anything. Mininova hosts lots of legit content and it's clear that the excellent subtitles are pretty useless unless people can find them. Torrent technology isn't the slightest bit illegal themselves. Just like you COULD download illegal content normally, but that doesn't make it to illegal to download. Torrents are just excellent tech for downloading and spreading files.
I felt it was my duty to mankind to spread them around after seeing some of the 'movie' ;)
But I can take the torrent down if Shane wants.
The other thing I could do is host it on 'www.legittorrents.info', which makes it a bit clearer :)

Because the movie itself is not an original creation. It's a violation of copyright. If you want to suggest to people how they might find it, fine, but directly linking is a no-no and could land me in serious legal hot water.

My mother tongue isn't English, so bear with me.
First of all, I would like to thank the people involved in making the critically commenting subtitles. Great job!
Next, in order to make Expelled play with these subtitles, I suppose you need Expelled as an avi-file AND re-name the subtitles file exactly in accordance with the movie's name (exepting the extension, in my case respectively .avi and .srt. - E.g. 'Expelled_critically commenting subtitles.avi' and 'Expelled_critically commenting subtitles.srt'). It works fine for me, using Media Player Classic.
Finally, since 2004, I have worked as a Philosophy and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) teacher in the International Baccalaureate (IB) system, and besides, I've taught Literature, Antiquity and Philosophy in my national educational system, in fact since 1976.
When some months ago I first watched Expelled, I thought "This seems interesting...". Now, having watched the movie a couple of times, and having visited a good deal of critical internet sites, I'm disappointed, embarrased and horrified on behalf of the Intelligent Design movement, and on behalf of honest Christians respecting Science as an independent realm besides the independent realm of Faith.
As far as I have been able to scrutinize things, Expelled is one of the most manipulating 'documentaries' I've ever watched.
For my teaching purposes, I've set up a web page on Intelligent Design vs. Evolution in general. However, it's a work in progress, and I have not had the time to update it with references to the subtitles materials at stake. Nevertheless it may be of some interest to members of this forum: http://kj.kolding-gym.dk/TOK%20archive/intelligent_design_andor_evolut.htm

Admittedly it's a privilege to live in Denmark in a lot of respects, albeit it's not exactly Paradise!
It's difficult for me to imagine a Danish initiative like Steins "Expelled". I guess it would be nipped in the bud, simply because we in our public life have a very long anti-authoritarian tradition, ridiculing stuffed shirts like Ben Stein.
I've added a few things to my High School educational page on Evolution and Intelligent Design, http://kj.kolding-gym.dk/TOK%20archive/intelligent_design_andor_evolut.htm, - i.e. a trailer to the excellent documentary "Judgement Day - Intelligent Design on trial", and a pfd-file synoptically combining the transcript from "Expelled" with Shane Killian's critical commentary.
Personally I'd prefered to omit Killian's purely subjective, taunting remarks. In my opinion they just weaken his (our) case. Having said that, I would like to thank Killian (and his sources) for a fine job!

The thing is, the movie tries to make it out like THEY'RE the ones being trodden on by those authoritarian stuffed-shirt evolutionists. And their followers just eat it up.

Thanks. And there weren't THAT many jabs. Hopefully enough to keep it entertaining.

With that said, it IS Creative Commons. If you want to download Subtitle Workshop (it's free!) and go through and delete the jabs (very easy to do!), it's fine with me; but it is an Attribution license, so if you do that and show or give the file to anyone else, please add in a subtitle at the beginning saying that you did it.

I certainly appreciate your critical comments! My only objection is that subjective, taunting remarks tend to weaken one's case.

I agree that the overriding strategy in Expelled is to make the ID people look like the victims of authoritarian evolutionists.

Also, there are software programs that convert DVDs to Avi format.

At the very start of the movie it shows a University auditorium full with students.

Sadly, I cannot find the reference which says that
1. the University was not informed that a creationism talk was to take place
2. only four real students were in the audience
3. the rest of the audience were extras/invited

If you can find the reference, it would be good to add in the subtitle file, at the start of the movie.
