Well, I've been able to fund my comic okay thus far but now the canadian-US exchange rate is REALLY crappy and making it more difficult.  If I could supplement that even just a little, it would help immensely and patreon may do the trick.  Anyone here who uses it and able to offer any advice?

General Discussion / Need a good way to send a large file
December 11, 2014, 12:50:45 AM
I wanted to send a game I recently played to Travis but AIM won't let me file transfer to him and the game is naturally too big to e-mail.  Anyone know a solution?

General Discussion / Most insane video game feats.
November 18, 2014, 09:12:16 PM
Just cause I love these sorts of things.  Here's a few to start.

Remember the guy who got a perfect in Fire and Flames on Guitar Hero?  How about doing it on Rock Band with all four people getting five stars?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEpO7hBMQcs

Beating Mario 1 in 5 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie4E3Bmqb5w

The god of Tetris  (watch the end, invisible blocks and he STILL keeps going!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwC544Z37qo

Playing Ikaruga (a game already known for being brutally hard) with 2 players solo.  o.O
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZEGyrEnXrk

And there's the guy who got a perfect score in Pacman.
Ie: Get all four ghosts on every power pellet and get all three fruits in all 250 levels.

After watching Extra Creditz' vid on the subject, while I truly believe they mean well, they're kinda out of their field on the subject.

For example, they describe the rising prices of items in MMO's as inflation but that's not exactly what the term means.  It means buying power of currency is weakened and the amount of it in existence is not the only factor in that.

Let me relate my own experiences with WoW since I played it for a very long time and know the economics quite well.

While it IS true that prices are higher now than they once were, players are all richer than they were back then too.  Back before any of the expansions, the richest player on my server was worth 10,000 gold or so.  Nowadays, anyone can grind that without too much trouble.  (I think there's a few players now who have hit the max gold amount which is 9,999,999 gold and have more on their alt characters) So it's kind of a stretch to therefore argue the economy is worse because it simply isn't.

But the higher prices make it harder on new players?
No, not really.  Because the price of low level materials and things has also gone up so a lowbie can easily earn quite a nice stack of gold for his level by gathering for a while.  Why?  Because high level players tend to buy low level materials for their alternate characters rather than bother to grind up the materials themselves.  In fact, I recall things like iron and mythril (relatively low level metals) selling for MORE than than the high level stuff because everyone was farming the later but not so many were farming the lower level stuff.
The materials in Outland in fact sold for a damn fortune if you could find a buyer because everyone hates that bracket and levels through it as quickly as possible, leaving very few people farming materials in there.

So is this really inflation or does Extra Creditz really need to stick to game design and not venture into the unintuitive world of economics?  Anyone else got MMO experiences to share on the subject?

I ask because I want to do a vid on it and I think it would be a good idea to give a wag of my finger to those who threw their lot in with the social justice retards and a tip of my hat to those who actually showed principle during this whole affair.

I know Totalbiscuit and Jontron spoke out against SJW's so bully to them along with Adam Baldwin.

We know the usual offenders who sided with them which includes Kotaku, The Escapist (who's editor in chief even openly admitted their bias and obtusely sees no problem with it) and such.

Anyone have any that should be added to either list?

General Discussion / Best insults ever
June 07, 2014, 12:13:53 AM
Source can be anywhere, real life, fiction, you name it.  What are some of your favorite witty insults you've ever heard?  (goes without saying but strong language alert)

"I never forget a face but in your case I'd be glad to make an exception." - Groucho Marx

"If you were my husband, I would poison your coffee."
"Ma'm, if you were my wife, I would drink it." - Winston Churchill

"This video is dedicated to you anonymous forum poster because you are a cunt.
Who are you?  You are a cunt, yes you are.
You live in a cunty cottage and you drive a cunty car." - Yahtzee

"Sit your five dollar ass down before I make change!" - unknown movie

"If this is coffee, please bring me some tea and if this is tea, please bring me some coffee" - Abraham Lincoln

"If you were any dumber, I would move you into the sunlight and water you periodically"

"You couldn't figure out how to empty water out of your boot if it was written on the sole."

Anyone got any good ones?

Doesn't have to be politics, can be anything.  Just give me what talking points you're tired of hearing and give a nice, brief reply to it so we can make a handy list.

Politics

Anarchism is utopian!
So how's that "Give a bunch of guys violent power and cross your fingers they don't abuse it" plan working out for ya?

Monsatto is TEH EVIL!!
Well yes they are but not for the reasons you think, see below.

GMO's are TEH EVIL!!
GMO's are not a new thing.  In fact, us messing with the genes of animals and plants for our own benefit is the one of the big reasons why starvation is not a thing in your world so kindly get off your high horse and do some actual research before opening your mouth please.

Big Pharma is TEH EVIL!!
Again, they kinda are but not for the reasons you think.

Charging for essential services IS TEH EVIL!
First of all, since when is paying taxes not charging for a service?  Second of all, are you insinuating that everyone who goes into "essential" fields should be forced to work for free because last I checked, that's called slavery and I really wonder how you plan to attract anyone into that field.  Think before you speak.

Rape cultural patriarchy!
You know, rather than repeat hollow mantras, it might help your cause to actually cite some sources and put real claims on the table because if you're implying that western society morally and legally tolerates rape, then you really have not been paying attention to the news these days.  Do the words "Duke Lacross" ring any bells for example?

Socialism can work if we just...
Whatever you were planning to finish that sentence with, it's already been done and has resulted in the ruling class making out like bandits and everyone else being poorer.  Socialism attempts to create equality through inequality and that's why it doesn't work.  Accept it and move on.

We are the 99%, eat the rich, etc etc...
And you're appealing to the richest and most powerful people in the country who are best buds for life with the rest of the rich people in the country to do that for you.  I really don't think you've thought this through very well.

Movies/TV

Twilight is the worst book ever!  RRRARRGH!!
Yes, yes it is.  We know.  We don't need to be reminded and would rather not be.  Please stop drawing attention to it.  You're just encouraging it.

CGI ruines movies!
I find this baffling because those who say it love to praise the hilariously unrealistic puppets and animatronics of the past, arguing that those movies had you using your imagination.  Yet you can't use your imagination with CGI?  Double standards much?

Wrestling is fake!
Not exactly one of the unsolvable mysteries of the universe there Sherlock.  And here's a newsflash: So are most of the TV shows, plays and other entertainment you watch.  Same thing!

I hate Justin Bieber!  Why won't he go away?
Fun fact: I only knew about his existence because of people like you complaining about it.  There's a moral here.

Video games

Video games don't represent women!
Really?  An industry that most women have turned their noses up at for the past 20 years doesn't represent them very well?  How truly shocking!

Dumbing down video games for the filthy casuals!  RRRARRGH!!
I'll quote Moviebob on this one: It's a game, not the SAT's.  Get over yourself.

Mario/Zelda/other franchise is old!
I'll let you in on a little secret: We know.  Nintendo knows, the fans know, everyone knows.  Nintendo and the fans just don't care and you're doing nothing even remotely helpful by pointing it out.

Skimpy costumes for female characters is TEH SEXIST!!
Even if she dresses that way by choice?  Who are you to judge?  The middle east FORCES their women to cover up and you undoubtedly call them oppressors.  You think maybe you're missing the mark a little bit?

Wii/WiiU is gimmicky/for casuals...blah blah...
Yeah cause exclusively going for the gun wanking fratboys has turned out to be such a great business model for Sony and MS hasn't it?  Nobody likes a sore loser guys.

It's not much right now but I'd like to spice it up so it can be a place for all the fans of my comic to get together.  Anyone have any advice to share as I'm really new at this.

General Discussion / Anyone familiar with fraps?
August 30, 2013, 09:49:17 PM
I've always used fraps to record game footage but these days, for some reason I can't get it to work properly.  I turn on fraps and the framerate gets so bad the game is unplayable.  (one of the reasons I haven't done vids recently)

Same games, nothing has really changed about this computer so I really don't know what's going wrong.  Anyone have advice?

I gotta get to bed so I didn't have time to really look at this in detail but it may paint a clearer picture of Anita.

Like the title says, I'm doing a video about copyright law and why it's bogus.

It's often been said that most murders, assaults and rapes are done by someone the victim knew.  Anyone know what exactly are the stats for that?

There's a villain character in the comic I write who's giving me trouble to write for as I'm not really an expert on mental problems.

A brief description of her, she was born with a mutation that gives her super powers but she was abandoned by her parents who labeled her a demon child.  She's been shunned all her life and her condition further stresses her grip on reality as her powers are hard to control.  As a villain, she likes to spread chaos and havoc, believing herself to be normal and that the world is what needs changing.

What kind of psychological condition might be applicable here and what kind of symptoms are there of it?  How do such people talk and behave?  I want to make her insanity more genuine.

General Discussion / Hero syndrome
February 11, 2013, 10:06:59 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_complex

I was watching a vid when this term came up and it just suddenly clicked.  Couldn't this be used to describe a certain class of people that we frequently have grievances with?
Create bad guys to wage wars against?  Check
Undermine the work of the poor so they can step in and "save" them?  Check
Break the economy so they can "fix" it?  Check
Narcisistic tendencies?  Double check!

I'm not a psychiatrist but think I'm onto something here?

This was in the editorial section of the BC newspaper "The Province" and from the title alone, I knew I was in for some big time bogosity.

QuoteCanada's health system isn't a ponzi scheme
Academics and policy wonks who wish to privatize many benefit delivery systems in Canada have a new media savvy salvo now aimed at the Canadian health care system.  They argue that since this system is not pre-funded, then it is a ponzi scheme with costs being passed to the next generation that are not sustainable.
According to wikipedia, "a ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that...is destined to collapse."  Is our health care system a ponzi scheme?
It's true that our health care system is not pre-funded.  Each year we have to find tax dollars to cover the benefit expenditures for that year.  But all tax based benefit systems have unfunded future commitments.  This includes all schools and all infastructure like highways.  We don't hear the same fears about them being unfunded.
What makes health care a more appropriate target is that the aging of the baby boom will put upward pressure on health care costs since such costs rise with age.  More accurately, these costs peak in the last few months of life.  So, as the boomers approach their time of death, health care costs will experience upward pressure.
Bill Robson of the C.D. Howe Institute estimates that the current value of this "implicit liability" of promised public healthcare spending under the pay as you go funding model by 2040 could be as much as 1.4 trillion (the value of the unfunded portion of future health care costs).
The impact of population aging on health care has been researched extensively - almost to death.  Population aging, by itself, will increase healthcare costs by about one percent per year.  If, today, healthcare costs 6000$ per person, then 10 years from now that will rise to 6,630$, purely because of population aging.
What percentage this will be of GDP will depend on how rapidly GDP is growing.  But with any growth, the overall impact will be less than one percent per annum.  Any rise in costs in excess of those projections will have other causes such as over servicing patients.
Thus if we are worried about health care costs, it is this modest added cost gap because of the aging of the baby boom that should be our focus rather than fully pre funding the system.
Many commentators point to the Canada Pension Plan as a success story with respect to adjusting to the aging baby boom.  In the early years, the CPP ran on a pay as you go basis.  Contribution cheques arrived in the morning and benefit cheques went out in the afternoon.  Assets were not growing.
But in 1996, the plan was significantly ammended, with contribution rates rising from six percent in 1997 to 9.9 percent in 2003.  The plan how has assets of around 160 billion.
But, it is not fully funded.  The liability of the CPP is around 900 billion, making the plan approximately 17 percent funded.  That is, total assets are about one sixth of total liabilities.  What is important however is that the plan is sustainable for the next 75 years with the current contribution rate of 9.9 percent.
Given the data above, the focus of our concerns for healthcare financing should be the temporary added costs of the baby boom.  If we decide to have partial pre funding to maintain the baby boom hump, then we need to move quickly.
For example, shifting the eligibility age for OAS to age 67 from 65 was delayed until 2023 - the majority of the boomers - faces no impact.
One mitigating factor in this saga is the improving life expectancy of Canadians.  Given that the biggest expenditure on health care is just before death, improving life expectancy, and therefore delaying the time of death, saves the health care system money.  In a pay as you go system, any costs delayed are actually costs saved.  So while there are some real concerns for the sustainability of our healthcare system, they are not as overwhelming as portrayed by some commentators.
Clearly the Canadian healthcare system  is not a ponzi scheme.  It is not fraudulent and it is not destined to collapse.  And full pre funding should not be the preffered policy solution.

Oh yeah, and from his picture, I'd estimate him to be in his late 50's or early 60's, heading towards retirement.  Anyone surprised?

Where does one even start with this train wreck?

So far, I have these

"Well I went through X and it worked fine for me!"
"Well I've paid taxes for years and I don't see any gun aimed at me!"
"We just need small government.  Anarchy is too extreme!"
"But there would be just chaos with no government!"
"Anarchy requires everyone to be saints!"
"But we'll get invaded!"

Anyone got one they'd like added?
#18
Thought this would make a nice reference to link people to in order to skip having to answer the same questions or accusations over and over.

Question: Well how are we supposed to do X without taxation?

Answer: If you're mugging people for a living and I tell you that you shouldn't do that because it's immoral, am I thus required to find you an alternate source of income lest you be free to continue mugging people?

Question: If you don't like the government, then why don't you move away?

Answer: If someone morally objects to government, it is THEIR obligation to move away?  So with government approval rating at less than 10%, are you saying 90% of the country should leave?

Claimed by a fellow on DA

"???? what? hold on there. I'm just trying to wrap my head around how it's not feminist to call out internalized misogynists. If a Black man suggesting black people should go back to slavery a racist, likewise, you'd call a woman saying a woman's place is in the kitchen a misogynist. Feminists aren't necessarily socialists, but a lot of them are socialists for the same reason a lot of civil rights leaders in the 60's were socialists, the promotion of equal beginnings and rights. Ayn Rand had a serious case of Internalized Misogyny, saying shit like this "If she says no, it's just for show, and a real man would ignore what she says and do what she wants." and why the main character got raped in The Fountain head, but it is perfectly okay because he is a superior capitalist hero."

When I said "citation or she didn't say it", he responded with...

"you mean like this, in the fountain head, that already posted? "If she says no, it's just for show, and a real man would ignore what she says and do what she wants.""

I already pointed out that this quote was by a fictional character and thus does not neccessarily reflect the views of the author but he was having none of it.

Has anyone read Fountain Head because I'm REALLY picking up the stench of misquoting here?
