Just wondering, but are scientists still allowed to patent genes?

Because I think patenting genes is bullshit.

Yeah, I don't see how it makes sense at all to patent things you observe in nature.

If a scientist came up with a completely new gene--that, say, caused a crop to yield more food with less acreage--THEN I could see it.
