I recall CBS News (in 60 Minutes), back in the 90's during another wave of anti-opiate hysteria which had led to a campaign by the DEA to restrict opiate prescriptions and prosecute doctors who kept prescribing high-dose opiates for severe chronic pain doing a piece on how the loss of such pain management was driving people to suicide, including specific people who had.

It'd be awesome if you could find that episode!

I think I've identified it, or one in a similar vein, with another two possibles.

Much later than I thought, Season 38, Episode 20 has a story listed as "Prisoner of Pain" according to The TV Database at

https://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=73290&seasonid=668034&id=317273&lid=7

The segment description reads:

QuoteAlso, when an accident victim has no control over their pain and ultimately, no control over the amount of pain meds he takes, is he further victimized when drug laws put him in jail?

There's also a segment listed as "Pain Killer" in Season 26, Episodes 13 and 36 at

https://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=73290&seasonid=674462&id=5685002&lid=7

but no description is included.
