General Discussion / The market and niche fando ms.
June 17, 2015, 07:26:12 PM
OK so I recently had an experience that has made me think. one of my favorite game series is Zero Escape but apparently the second game iddn't make enough profit to justify a third game which sucks because the series ended on a cliffhanger. I was talking to a friend about it and when I mentioned the series apperently didn't make enough money for a sequel he mentioend it was an issue of the market. which ahs me thinking. I tend to be a par tof a lot of niche fandoms. Things that don't get a lot of consumor or market attention. so what would it mean for somebody like me?

http://reason.com/blog/2015/03/02/sacramento-targets-pay-it-forward-group

QuoteIn Sacramento, a group of charitable housemates has been holding free giveaways on their front lawn. All recently homeless, the housemates say they benefitted from the kindness of strangers in their times of need and now want to pay the goodwill forward by distributing donated goods to others. But the city is trying to shut down the operation, which it says counts as an illegal garage sale.

Under Sacramento city code, residents may only hold one lawn or garage sale per year; holding too many sales will yield a preliminary warning, followed by a fine of up to $1,000 upon the second offense. Kate Worsley and her housemates received a warning from the city last week, according to CBS Sacramento. Officials say the home has been holding too many garage sales and must be considered a business, which the neighborhood isn't zoned for.

Worsley insists that what they're doing isn't a sale at all, but a giveaway. All items, from used baby toys to canned goods to romance novels, are donated from members of the community—the housemates solicit them via a "pay-it-forward" Facebook group—and given away for free. Cash donations are accepted from those who want to give, with the money going to provide Sunday sack lunches for the homeless.

But altruism can be such an eyesore, complain neighbors like Brent Sanchez, who called the whole business "kind of tacky."

Worsley and her housemates are now considering whether to fight the city's code enforcement or start holding the giveaways at different homes around the area. Regardless, "code enforcement will not stop me from helping people," Worsley posted to the "Pay It Forward In Sacramento Ca" Facebook group. "I am still taking donations to help provide the people in need with the things they need," she told me in a message.

Yeah go vernments REALLY care about helping the poor.

I think I may need help understanding this. can somebody explain these concepts to me in layman's terms?

I was talking with a friend and he said that I lack plasticity and I have trouble releasing and imprinted thought.  What does this mean?

I'm in something of a pickle. I lost a dear friend recently. I miss her so much and I have no idea where she is or if she's alright. It feels like everything in my life is screwing up and I can't do anything about it. I've fallen in to something of a deep depression and the only thing that even has a shot of keeping me remotely stable is telling myself that my friend is alright and I'll see her again despite the evidence being weighed against it. The probability that she's in a horrible place and I'll never see her again seems very high. Am I just lying to myself or is it OK to believe in spite of this that my friend is OK and I'll see her again soon?

General Discussion / The many worlds theory.
December 02, 2014, 12:48:13 PM
Can this even be called a theory in the proper sense of the word? I have a hard tme wth this, especially the notion that anyone believes it  whereas I have yet to see a single shred of fact or evidence backing it up. Is there ANYTHING to this "theory"?

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/09/ok-trooper-tells-local-news-best-way-not-to-get-raped-by-cops-is-to-follow-the-law/

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol official reportedly told women that the best way not to get raped by an officer was to "follow the law."

In recent months, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer and an Oklahoma City Police officer have been accused of repeatedly raping women, often during traffic stops.

After a Tulsa County sheriff's deputy was arrested last week for sexually assaulting a woman while responding to a 911 call, Tulsa NBC News affiliate KJRH decided to ask the Oklahoma Highway Patrol how to stay safe during a traffic stop.

The department noted that troopers should always be in uniform, and that women were allowed to keep their car door locked, and to speak with officers through a cracked window. A trooper should rarely ask a person to come back to the patrol car, OHP advised.

"There are certain situations where we do that," Capt. George Brown told KJRH. "If someone doesn't have a driver's license on their person. We asked for an ID or driver's licence, if they can't provide it, rather than stand outside the car writing [a ticket], which puts us in a bad location, we may ask a female back to the car so we can get her information."

The KJRH anchor said that Brown concluded with this advice: "The captain says anything that happens inside a troopers car is videotaped, and he says that supervisors do review those tapes."

"He says the best tip that he can give is to follow the law in the first place so you don't get pulled over," the anchor added.

Brown told KWTV that OHP was working to regain the public's trust.

"There are entirely more good officers than there are the few bad apples that exist out there, and we want people to know that," he explained. "We have a lot of good troopers, a lot of good officers out there doing a lot of good things daily, and we want to continue that and have the public continue their trust in us."

Watch the video below from KJRH, broadcast Sept. 17, 2014.

I stumbled upon this when doing some recent independent research on transmedia storytelling.  It certainly seems like an interesting culture to evolve around the entertainment industry

General Discussion / OK so I have this friend.
August 04, 2014, 12:50:46 AM
He absolutely despises libertarians. he lumps them n with Objectivists and collectively calls them "Randroids" "Plutocrats" and "Sociopaths". I can't really confront him on this because I value our friendship so I've been quiet about it. he doesn't seem to be willing to isten to reason even going so far as thinkng liberatarianism would lead to dictatorships and slavery apparently.  I just don't know where he's getting all this. And it doesn't seem like a normal disimissel. this is calculated, targeted hatred.

General Discussion / I feel helpless
May 22, 2014, 09:19:28 PM
I've been a huge fan of Star Wars for years. argey because it's pretty much the only massive universe with a single, mostly consistent and cohesive canon across al mediums. Rather then being like Marvel, DC, The Ninja Turtles, etc and having separate film, comic, book, and game canons. Now that's all beign wiped away in favor of a stupid reboot. I'm trying to rally EU fans to boycott the new materiel so we can see more of the Star Wars that we want but they insist that it won't do any good and we should just keep "takng what they give us". I just feel so helpless seeing something I love so much being destroyed and feeling powerless to stop it.

General Discussion / It just keeps getting worse.
May 05, 2014, 09:39:08 AM
http://starwars.com/news/electronic-arts-selected-for-multi-year-agreement-for-the-future-of-star-wars-gaming.html

One proverbial deal with the devil after another. it's bad enough that they're just giving one giant middle finger to the canon and throwing it out completely and there doesn't seem to be much hope for ANY mention of Garn Bel Iblis or Mon Mothma in Star Wars: Rebels and probably COMPLETELY abandoning the old canon and putting out any new content for it. Now they select potentially one of the WORST publishing companies out there  right now next to Activations to exclusively handle new games? We're never gong to get another masterpiece like KOTOR II and any prospects of seeing 1313 are completely dead. I invested damn near a decade in to Star Wars. Not just the films but EVERYTHING. Books, games, comics, EVERYTHING. It deserves better then this.

I've been looking in to it a lot lately and I've been wondering whether we may be close ot the answer in this century. I've seen possible leads in quantum physics (For immortality of consciousness), neuroscience, and transhumanism. What are you guys thoughts?

OK Ikeep hearing this caim form anarcho-communists whenI point out ot them that resources are finite and that, contrary to what they seem to think, scarcity is in fact a real thing and NOT manufactured by the evil bourgeois institutions I aways get something aong these lines

QuoteThere is enough arable land to feed every person in the world many times over. There is enough housing and materials to build houses to supply everyone on earth. The ratio of desire to stuff is irrelevant. Desire itself is irrelevant. Starvation and homelessness are relevant. And if we cared enough we could provide enough of food and shelter to eradicate both. But we don't.

OK I keep hearng this narrative about how Austiren Economics rejects empiricism and supposedly von Mises even admitted such. can anybody help clerify this for me?

This is something that's been bugging me. themost common argumentI see from left-anarchists in regards to voluntaryism is their favorite rebuttal that if your alternative to a situation is to starve or be homeless thenit'snot really a voluntary situation. I honestly dont' know how to respond to this and it's bothering me immensely.
